Setting up proper shipping rates is essential for the health of your business. This article will go through the specific settings merchants on the Shopify Checkout need to make sure everything works as expected.
Before you start
This article applies to merchants using the Shopify Checkout. If you use the ReCharge Checkout, please look at Setting up shipping for subscription products.
Configure your shipping settings
Set up and control your shipping rates through your Shopify admin. We recommend the following for your shipping settings.
-
Keep all your shipping rates in your general profile and do not use shipping profiles.
-
Use weight-based rates and use the same rates for both one time products and subscription products.
Keep in mind that Shopify always selects the cheapest applicable rate for orders. If you want to assign a flat rate for recurring orders, you can apply a manual rate to your customers in ReCharge by clicking switch to a manual rate.
Shipping rates for mixed carts
To calculate the shipping rate for orders with both one-time and subscription products in their cart, Shopify calculates the total order weight and price for the one-time products, and then the total order weight and price for subscription products separately. Both rates will display independently at the checkout.
Customers are then able to select which shipping rate they wish to apply to one time-purchases. The shipping rate for subscription products will default to the least expensive option.
Each rate is then separately applied to the customer’s order. As an example, the following store only has one shipping rate set up - a flat $5.00.
If a customer checked out with a mixed cart, Shopify calculates the entire cart and assigns a $5.00 shipping rate to the one-time product and a $5.00 shipping rate to the subscription product. The customer would pay $10.00 in shipping.
FAQ
What settings do I set in ReCharge?
At this time you control shipping settings in Shopify, however, you still have the ability to override shipping rates by switching existing subscription customers' shipping rates manually.
Can I update the shipping rate for existing customers?
Yes, but shipping rates are calculated dynamically, so the new rate will apply to the recurring order after the queued order.
The queued order was created before the shipping rate was updated, so the old rate would still apply to the order. To update the rate on the queued order, reach out to ReCharge Support and we'll help regenerate the upcoming orders.
What happens if I remove a shipping rate or the existing subscriber's order no longer qualifies for a shipping rate?
Orders will still process and ship even if they don't have any applicable shipping rates.
If you would like orders to give an error instead of processing with a $0.00 shipping rate, please reach out to ReCharge support.
Can I use Shopify Shipping profiles?
We do not recommend using Shopify Shipping profiles on Shopify Checkout. While it works on initial checkout, using shipping profiles can lead to discrepancies on recurring charges.
