Adding or swapping a product or SKU
You may need to add a new product, swap to a different product, or swap SKUs on a prepaid subscription for a customer. You can easily add or swap products or SKUs in the customer account in Recharge. This guide provides an overview of how to change the products in a subscription.
Before you start
- SKU swapping and variant swapping are terms that are used interchangeably and represent the same action.
Add a product
- Click Customers in your merchant portal.
- Search and select the customer.
- On the customer details page, click the ellipsis menu on the address bar.
- Choose Add product.
- Search and click Select on the desired product.
- Click Next and enter the subscription details.
- Click Add product.
Swap a SKU
You can swap SKUs from the merchant portal by updating the variant on an existing subscription:
- In the merchant portal, click Customers and search and select the customer.
- Select the subscription product and click Edit subscription product.
- Change variant in dropdown. The variant will be used to swap SKUs.
- Click Save.
Swap a product
Rather than removing or canceling a product and adding a new product, you can use the swap option to switch to a different subscription product.
- Click Customers in your merchant portal.
- Search and select the customer.
- On the customer details page, click the ellipsis menu on the product you wish to swap.
- Choose Swap from the menu.
- Select the product and click Next.
- Change the variant if required. Otherwise click Swap product
Swapping SKUs on a prepaid subscription
If you'd like to swap SKUs of upcoming shipments during a prepaid subscription cycle, the process is different than a standard product swap.
For more information on changing the variants on prepaid subscriptions, visit Changing the product or SKU for an existing pre-paid subscription. Reach out to the Recharge support team, if you are having trouble.
Handle a product swap in bulk
There are two methods for updating a product swap in bulk. The method you should use depends on your store's platform. Review the methods below and select base on your platform in-use.
Method 1 - Bulk Managing Subscription tool
- Recharge Checkout on Shopify
- Recharge Checkout on BigCommerce
- Custom
Merchants on the Recharge Checkout on Shopify can use the Bulk Managing Subscriptions tool to make a product swap update without any intervention from Recharge. To process this type of update you will need to complete the Importing Subscriptions template with:
address_id
subscription_id
product_title
variant_title
variant_id
- The Variant ID is a mandatory column. To locate IDs, visit find a Shopify variant ID. Use find a product ID for BigCommerce.
The product_title and variant_title are optional columns. If the titles are remaining the same, you only need to fill in the variant_id column. Updating the variant ID will not automatically update other product attributes, such as price or title. If you require other updates, be sure to add these additional columns. Export the Subscriptions - All or Subscriptions - Active from the Data section in the merchant portal to gather the required information for the update template. All other columns can be removed from the template for the upload.
Method 2 - CSV via Recharge Support
If you have 50 or more subscription products to update, the Recharge support team can facilitate a bulk update for you. You will need to prepare a CSV file with updated information and send it to the support team. Accommodate 5 business days to complete the update.
- In the merchant portal, go to Exports.
- Click Create export and select the Subscriptions - All export from the drop-down.
- In the CSV, add the columns product_title, variant_title, and variant_id.
- In the variant_id column, enter the variant ID of the product to swap with.
- The product_title and variant_title are optional columns. If the titles are remaining the same, you only need to fill in the variant_id column.
- Updating the variant ID will not automatically update other product attributes, such as price or title. If you require other updates, be sure to add these additional columns.
- You only need to fill in the rows that will be receiving the update. Rows not requiring an update should be removed from the file.
- When finished, send the formatted CSV to the Recharge support team.
