Using Shopify shipping profiles
Shopify shipping profiles allow you to create shipping rates for specific products. This allows you to control international shipping rates, create custom rates, and specify conditional logic. In addition, you can offer free shipping for subscription products to incentivize customers. This guide provides instructions on using Shopify shipping profiles with Recharge.
Instructions for the Shopify Checkout Integration
Note: This feature is at the Early Adopter stage. See Early Adopter Program for more information.
Previously, subscription and one-time products shared the same shipping rates in Shopify. Using this feature, Shopify Checkout Integration merchants can now use all of the available Shopify shipping profile settings to offer international, custom, conditional, and/or free shipping rates for subscription products only. Increasing control over shipping rates allows merchants to offer different shipping rates for subscription products and incentivize customers to subscribe.
Note the following limitations before enabling this feature:
- This feature does not support expedited shipping options at this time.
- With this feature enabled, shipping profile settings apply to all subscriptions, including new and existing customers.
Enable the feature
Refer to the following steps to enable this feature:
- From the merchant portal, click Settings and select Shipping.
- From the Shipping settings page, click Create Shopify shipping profile to enable the feature.
- Shipping rates must be configured in Shopify before subscription products are assigned to specific rates. Click Configure shipping rates in Shopify to set up your Shopify shipping profile.
- After setting up your Shopify shipping profile, click My rates look good.
- Click Assign subscriptionproducts. This will associate your subscriptions to your configured shipping profile.
- After completing the previous steps, the feature is marked as enabled on the Shipping settings page.
Instead, you must follow these steps:
-
-
- From your Shopify admin, click Settings and select Shipping and delivery.
- In the Custom Shipping Rates section, click Create new profile.
- Enter a name for the profile.

Instructions for the Recharge Checkout on Shopify
Configure specific rates for subscription products only
You can use Shopify shipping profiles to set a different shipping rate for your subscription products only. You may want to use this method to offer free shipping.
Step 1 - Create the shipping profile
- From your Shopify shipping settings select Create new profile under Custom shipping rates.
- Add a name for your Shipping profile and select Add products.
- For Recharge Checkout on Shopify, select the auto-renew version of each product that you want to include in this rate.
- Click Done.
-
Optional step: If you ship products from multiple locations, select Manage under Shipping from to determine which location to ship this product from. Otherwise, your default location will be selected automatically.
The shipping rate you set will only apply to the products you have selected. Since the auto-renew subscription product, and not the original non-subscription product, goes through the Recharge Checkout, it will qualify for this shipping rate.
Step 2 - Specify the shipping rate
- Select Create shipping zone under Shipping to. Enter a name for the shipping zone and choose the countries you would like to ship your subscription products to. Click Done to save your selection.
- Select Add rate to create the shipping rate.
- Choose Set up your own rates.
- Add a rate name and set the price customers will pay for shipping.
- Click Done.
Click Save once you are finished creating your shipping profile. Your new rate will now be listed under Custom shipping rates in your Shopify shipping settings.
Follow the steps again to create a separate shipping profile for the original, non-subscription product.
