Understanding multiple payment methods
Multiple payment methods allow customers to store more than one payment type in their customer portal. Customers and store owners can add, edit, and choose a different payment method for a subscription.
This guide provides an overview of Recharge payment methods, confirming the payment method type, and other tips to ensure you are referencing the most accurate information while using the Recharge Help Center.

Confirm the payment method type for your store
Method 1 - Use the Billing information section
- Click Subscriptions in the merchant portal and select a customer’s name.
- Review the left navigation menu.
- If the navigation menu includes a link called “Payment methods”, you are on the Multiple Payment Method type.
- If the navigation menu includes a link called “Billing Information” you are on the Single Payment Method type.

With Recharge multiple payment methods, you can also update payment methods for the address profile via the customer’s profile by selecting the Update payment method button on the See Details page.
With Single Payment Methods, the note “Your store is configured to allow one payment method per customer” is visible on the See Details page below Payment Methods. If you are using multiple payment methods, you will have the option to select the add new payment method button.

Shopify Checkout Integration
If you use the Shopify Checkout Integration, your customers can update their payment and billing information by clicking the Send update email button in their customer portal. This button triggers an email from Shopify to update your existing information. See Update billing information – Customer portal.
You can also click the Send update email button in the merchant portal under Payment methods for a specific customer, which triggers an email to the customer from Shopify. See Update billing information - Merchant portal.
Migrated Shopify Checkout Integration
There are two ways to add additional payment methods for a customer if you migrated to the Shopify Checkout Integration.
Customers can manually add a new credit card to their customer portal through the Add Payment Method button. This creates additional payment methods that can then be used for subscriptions.
If a customer uses the Send update email and enters a different credit card than the existing one, the existing payment method is replaced.
These subscribers can update their payment and billing information in their customer portal. See Instructions for your customers – Update billing information.
