Converting from Recharge Checkout on Shopify to the Shopify Checkout Integration
If you are interested in converting to the Shopify checkout, we make the conversion process as easy as possible.
In November 2020, Recharge partnered with Shopify to create a new version of Recharge that leverages the Shopify Checkout and Shopify’s Subscription APIs. This upgraded experience offers a host of benefits for merchants, such as a native checkout that supports subscriptions, improved checkout conversions, deeply integrated data in the Shopify admin, and more.
This guide provides an overview and additional resources to ensure a transition to Shopify Checkout is right for your business.

Conversion overview
Storefront and store settings
Regardless of your configuration of Recharge, converting to Shopify checkout requires an update to your store’s settings and a refreshed install of your storefront’s subscription widget.
For most merchants, steps to convert your store can be completed in a matter of minutes, after the assessment team has had time to evaluate your store and provide guidance on customizations your store may require.
Updating your store’s settings consists of:
- Granting additional permissions in Shopify's admin to allow app access to Shopify's subscription API's
- Enabling one of Shopify’s eligible payment processors in the Shopify admin
- Eligibility to offer subscriptions on an eligible payment processor is a prerequisite for the Shopify Checkout Integration
- Creating selling plan groups which are the Shopify objects that represent how subscriptions can be sold
- Installation of the Shopify Checkout Integration compatible subscription widget
Most merchant customizations to the subscription widget on Recharge Checkout are easy to replicate on the Shopify Checkout. During the assessment process, the Checkout Conversion team will help you evaluate customizations to your storefront, resources needed to replicate, and expected timeframe for completion.
Migrate existing subscribers
After the storefront and store settings are updated, new subscribers are checking out using the Shopify Checkout. Now, you have the option to leverage Recharge's safe, reliable process to migrate existing subscribers to have all their recurring orders processed through Shopify.
Existing subscriber migration consists of:
- Adding the payment gateway currently used with Recharge as a legacy gateway within Shopify admin.
- Schedule time for Recharge to perform the existing subscriber migration.
- Recharge updates existing customer data to Shopify’s standards.
- The Checkout Conversion team will send a confirmation once the migration of existing subscribers is complete.
Recharge recommends waiting 5 business days after the storefront and store settings updates to migrate your existing subscribers. This allows you to ensure the conversion meets your expectations and validate that new checkouts are coming in as expected. Confirm with the Checkout Conversion team when you're ready to migrate your existing subscribers.
